How to Pay Your Contractor

The ONE key in this process is to pay for what you get, NOT pay and hope you get.

Do not provide half (or any percentage) of the contract price up front. This is a standard ask, but you do not have to go along. 

To accomplish this you will need to do several things:

Develop a Payment Policy and strictly enforce it, including prompt payments.

Communicate the policy and your expectations clearly up front. 

Master the “Trust Dance.”

Protect yourself with lien waivers.

Stick to your guns.

Finish strong (punch list procedures)
