Flipping America 259, Why You WILL Succeed

podcast 259 Why You WILL Succeed

Opening:

Last time we talked about why businesses fail, why I have failed, and why you have failed. But I can’t leave it at that. Because we are not going to fail. Failure may describe certain moments in our lives, but it will not define us. It will not be the words whispered at our funeral, it will not be etched in the minds of our loved ones. Those thoughts will be “success” and “overcame adversity” and “never quit.” And that is precisely why you will not fail – because you will not quit. You will not give up.

You may have identified with one or three of the items I described in the last show. It could be that you have had a very public failure and are suffering from embarrassment right now. It could also be that despite the appearance that everything is ok, you are struggling to survive, your head is barely above water, you don’t know how you’ll live into the future but you can barely see past the present right now. Many of you are somewhere in-between, bouncing back and forth between successes and failures. But almost everyone I know who is over 30 has occasional periods of self-doubt and feelings of failure. Today we are going to challenge those thoughts of self-defeat. We are going to rise above our sense of failure, learn what we need, move on, and try it again. We know we might fail again. But perhaps it won’t be due to the same errors. We will refine our approach, we will get better, we will keep on pressing. We may not be as talented, as intuitive, as clear, as smart, or as articulate as someone else, but we will keep going. We will not quit. We will prevail.

Topic: Why You Will Succeed

  1. You have a clear understanding of your definition of success.
    1. Ecclesiastes 9:7 Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart, for God has already approved what you do. 8 Let your garments be always white. Let not oil be lacking on your head. 9 Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your vain life that he has given you under the sun, because that is your portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun. 10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might, for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going.
    2. In other words, Find someone to love and meaningful work to do and choose to enjoy life.
  2. You accept personal responsibility for your outcome. Chance (genetics, natural abilities, circumstance) happens to all, but your response to chance occurrence is where you will find your life, your living, and ultimately your reward.
  3. You have internal motivation.
  4. You have positive self-talk. (see my mantra).
  5. You listen to feedback and criticism,
    1. Learn from the valid
    2. Understand all the rest is from and of the speaker.
  6. You are focused. (not distracted for long). You are chasing one target. It may be a big one and it may be complicated, but your gaze is fixed and steady.
  7. You understand your strengths and your weaknesses. You address your weaknesses through partner or staff.
  8. You pay attention to the marketplace.
    1. Sell what they want, not what you love.
    2. Craft your message to address perceived need
  9. You pay attention to your customers. Over-deliver
  10. While remaining focused, your spidey senses are tuned to the winds of change.
  11. You balance Challenge and Realism when setting your goals.
  12. While remaining current you don’t get wrapped up in business fads. Most of them are either some new way to try and motivate unmotivated people or an excuse for less than optimal performance. Where it becomes truly ridiculous is for a small company of 3 to 5 employees trying to implement things like Six Sigma, Matrix Management, Agile Development, Scrum Theory, etc etc.
    1. Mindfulness. Studies show that increased emphasis on mindfulness correlates with decreased productivity.
    2. Work Life balance. For most people this will never be a reality. Work consumes a 1 hour commute, 8 hours on the job, 1 hour back. Assuming you sleep 7 hours a night (not healthy for most), you have 7 hours left in your day for “life.” If you live a thoughtfully planned life, there goes 30 minutes a day just making plans. Then you have time for meal prep, home maintenance, relating to the family, self enrichment through learning activities — and realistically, if you have children, you have NO time to watch TV. Well, not if you are doing much of the other. Balance is an illusion.
    3. Work from home. Most people simply cannot do it.
    4. Buzzwords: pivot, lean-in, agile, unicorn, disrupt, gig economy, machine learning, Industrial Revolution 4.0 (automation, again), intrapreneur (corporate entrepreneur), corporate story-telling, push tolerance, discretionary effort, business ecosystem,
  13. You will push yourself. Go to the edge of your ability and stamina and then push a little bit harder. Tomorrow or in a few days the edge of your ability and stamina will be a little further out. (You don’t have to do this of course. Feel free to be mediocre.)
  14. You will never stop learning.
    1. The true purpose of higher education
    2. The person who does not read has no advantage over the person who cannot. Possibly Mark Twain but probably not.
    3. You will learn, grow, improve, add skills, evaluate new tools and ideas with high level thinking,
  15. You won’t quit. You just won’t give up. Some days are going to feel like you are neck deep in mud but you are being asked to sprint through it. You don’t believe you can, you are tired thinking about it and you don’t even want to try. You are going to have days like this. For some of you, you might have weeks like this. Every step, every call, every email takes effort that feels superhuman to you. But you carry on. When you don’t feel like getting up, get up earlier. When you don’t feel like pushing on, push harder. When you think you’ve reached the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on. When you feel like a solitary soldier on the battle line being rushed by 500 warriors on horses, pull your sword and prepare to fight to the last. It will not always feel like a fight but some days it will. Those are the days to NOT quit. It’s easy to NOT quit when things are going well. The time to NOT quit is the time when things look bleak, when the outcome is uncertain. The time for courage is when you have fear. The time for resolute determination is when it seems that superior forces are arrayed against you. You will succeed because you will not quit. You will stand your ground, you will work the work you will trust the process you will do the thing you will not give up you’re going to learn you’re going to improve your going to get better and you will succeed.

Motivational Thoughts for the day

that’s easy to understand that’s property grade it’s completely free there’s no in-app purchase there’s no upselling there’s no limit to the number of times you can use it,

the other app we have in the App Store is all one word flipping America Network,

and you may have heard but the flipping America Network is out its live it’s a place where anyone wishing to sell a property can post the property and Real Estate Investors will see the property and make an offer if you’re a buyer a landlord or a Fix and Flip by or whatever reason you’re buying you are going to

let us know where you want a property what you’re looking for and when a property is posted

and the territory look for you going to end identify by ZIP code when a property is posted in that zip code you will get a text message alerting you,

there is a property listed in the fan the flipping America Network.

it’s completely free it’s free to set up a profile it’s free to list your property for sale there’s a small technology fee that happens only when you buy or sell a property.

[9:43] Otherwise completely free to use,

[11:31] Music.

[11:49] So here we go why you’re going to succeed number one you have a clear understanding of your definition of success.

[11:59] This is where you have to begin right because how will you know if you succeeded if you don’t know what you mean by succeed.

[12:07] There’s an ancient book of wisdom called Ecclesiastes and in the 9th chapter of that book.

The writer who calls himself a teacher through the book says go,

eat your bread with joy and drink your wine with a merry heart for God has already approved what you do let your garments be always White

let not oil be lacking on your head enjoy life with the wife whom you love all the days of your vein life that he is giving you under the sun because that is your portion in life and in your toilet would you toil under the sun

whatever your hand finds to do do it with all your might.

Are there is no work or thawed or knowledge or wisdom in the afterlife to which you are going.

There’s some perspective there and there’s some wisdom there and if I could I might dare try to paraphrase this by saying in other words find someone to love and meaningful work to do.

And make a conscious choice to enjoy your life if you have someone to love and meaningful work to do and you choose to enjoy life.

You see that that is a definition of success that doesn’t put pressure on you to make a certain amount of money or drive a certain vehicle or achieve some certain level of whatever it is culture and Society may try to dictate to you.

[13:35] I believe it’s you to ignore culture and society and look into yourself.

Find someone to love find some meaning for work to do to occupy your time be aware that.

In just a few breaths this life will be winding down and over.

And so find a way to choose to enjoy it in the meantime

regardless of the circumstances regardless of the situation regardless of your ability and regardless of the outcome even find a way to choose to enjoy life that gives everyone a chance to succeed.

So Define your success.

That’s number one number two you’re going to succeed because you accept a personal responsibility for your outcome.

Chance happens to us all and by chance I’m referring to genetics.

You are born and endowed with certain natural abilities and shortcomings in addition to just the way you are made.

There are circumstances in life certain opportunities may never be available to you.

Are you than to spend your life and regret an indie for the things that were never a possibility no.

[15:05] Chance happens to us all but your response to chance.

[15:11] The situation of your life the person that you are the abilities that you have and the skills that du Lac.

Your response to those things is where you will find your life you’re living and ultimately your reward.

Right now at this point ask yourself have I done everything I can with what I have and I really.

And I really tried as hard as I can with the skills that I have to make things happen.

[15:44] Have I really that’s all you have to ask because if you’ve given it your all then that’s all that can be required if you all you can do is all you can do

number 3 in the reasons why you’re going to succeed you have internal motivation now I don’t have a bone to pick with motivational speakers

no problem at all,

motivational speakers have served a real important role in the lives of a lot of people but I am going to tell you this if you constantly need a motivational speaker to bring motivation to your life

then I think it’s fair to question whether or not you’re going to be a success because the successful people that I know and have met,

they have an internal drive that doesn’t need external stimuli they have something going on inside of them that just pushes them to that next level pushes them to that next learning pushes them,

to try that new thing and it’s from within.

[16:43] Now all of us can use a good pep talk from time to time and that’s why I

I’m fine with motivational speakers but this is the thing it’s kind of like counseling and therapy it did it’s good for you if you need it and can use it for a short time but they have a lifetime of dependency on it is,

indicative that something is truly and deeply wrong number for the reasons why you’re going to succeed.

You have positive self-talk there are things that you just say to yourself that convince you that you’re okay,

messages it maybe messages that

you consciously say and repeat every morning it may be things that you just believe about yourself and and in your situation and your circumstances and it could be something that you’ve written down and you go back to from time to time

and if you’ve listened to the show if you listen to every show I’ve done then you heard me say this at least once but I’m going to read for you my own personal Mantra that comes from my life experience and things that I’ve thought about and,

developed over the years.

[17:55] When I look in the mirror I see the reason the credit for my successes the blame for my failures.

I cannot make it without my team and I tell them often but when they succeed it’s because I chose well and I ledwell.

When they fail it’s because I did not choose or lead well I am the reason.

[18:21] I may have setbacks but I cannot fail if I don’t ever give up.

You got circumstances I got circumstances we all got circumstances but you won’t find me undermine.

My situation will not dictate my emotion my circumstances will not control my results external forces will not take away my power to choose.

I cannot change the world but I can change me and the way I relate to it so I charge on.

I am the reason I have a massive Vision which creates massive pressure.

Leading to Massive Action which is the only chance I have to achieve massive results the world doesn’t owe me success.

God doesn’t owe me success no one but me is going to work hard for my success therefore no one will work harder for their success than I will for mine.

I will give my all and then push a bit more so tomorrow my all will be more.

[19:32] I had that out at all of my vents and give people the opportunity to repeat it with me it turned into a little bit of fun we we call it the success pledge or something like that at every event

then it’s a good thing to say to yourself.

[19:48] In the morning when you’re looking in the mirror or when things are looking kind of Bleak and grim,

you don’t have to use these exact words these a lot have come out of my own personal experience my reading in my own thinking but you need something to tell yourself positive self-talk,

and it may consist of and I’ve helped a lot of young people you know some of you may know I used to be a high school teacher and so I helped a lot of teenagers dealing with those years of self-doubt and and lack of self-esteem and you know,

things happen on your face that you don’t understand things are brewing in your body that you don’t understand and

you don’t really your ear kind of interested in the other sex but you’ve had no idea how to really talk to them and you can’t imagine why anybody would want to anyway and so

helped a lot of kids get through this thing because they look at the other kids and crispino adults do this to but the kids would look at other kids that had a little bit more going on in their opinion and would see what they had going on,

and by comparison they would come up short and so they would feel bad about themselves and so forth and so on and I know that everybody is learning to rank themselves and all this during these these

Days Inn during this time.

[21:05] The thing that I would say over and over again is everybody has strengths everybody has weaknesses when you see those kids that look like the Natural Born leaders that are out there on the football field or the cheerleaders or whoever it is you envy

they’ve got weaknesses they’ve got their moments of doubt and we all do but rather than focusing on anyone else.

Focus on yourself and don’t focus on your shortcomings look at your strengths look at the things that you can do well.

[21:37] How do you know you do it well,

well it may be it may be an area that is related to a subject you got a Zone in school maybe not it may be something that other people have told you that you do well if there are people around you that you trust

and you trust him to give you honest feedback and they’re telling you you’re good at this okay you can take that to the bank,

think about the things that you are good at the things that you do well.

That other people have a firm that you do well and start to build your self-esteem and your success around that.

That’s what it means to have positive self-talk.

All right there’s more we’ve got a lot more to this success thing number 5.

[22:23] You’re going to be successful because you listened to feedback and criticism.

[22:30] Everyone that tries to accomplish anything is going to get some sort of feedback.

And perhaps Phyllis a you open a restaurant you will know whether it’s good or not because people will vote with their feet.

They’ll either be there or they won’t know a lot of people are polite enough they’re not going to tell you man this food really bad.

And when you see that the people try it and they don’t come back you know that’s a form of feedback that you should listen to.

But then on the other hand there are certain people out there who Delight in picking on whatever.

The greatest musicians the greatest actors and actresses the greatest entertainers the greatest basketball players football players whatever of all time.

Did not win over 100% of the people that were supposed to be entertained by them the Beatles didn’t win everybody over and if the Beatles Can’t Win everybody over you’re not going to.

[23:32] It’s.

Funny to me to watch today’s Young NBA superstars arguing with 16 year olds on social media do just got to let it go.

Everybody’s going to get some criticism but here’s what you do you sort out,

the valid criticism from the invalid and you listen to the valid feedback and criticism and learn from it adapt and improve.

And understand.

Everything else that’s coming at you out there is probably almost certainly a reflection of where that person is.

And not a reflection of the person that you are.

Many of the criticisms that will be leveled against you as you have an increasing public presence will come from the heart of that person projection.

Isn’t just for the movie business folks it’s a part of life.

People see something in themselves and subconsciously project that on to you and you’ll get accused of certain things that you have no idea where that’s coming from.

Trust me when I say it’s coming from that person it’s a part of who they are.

[26:35] Music.

[26:51] Next reason you are going to be successful you are focused.

[27:00] We all give into distractions from time to time.

But you’re successful because you’re not going to get distracted for long you are chasing one target.

Now it may be a big Target and it may be complicated and it may have a lot of.

Pieces to it and a lot of processes to get there but your gaze is fixed and steady on one,

Target that one thing motivates you it drives you and it provides the focus for your life number 7 you understand your strengths and your weaknesses.

[27:38] Everybody has them no one is completely in superbly gifted in all areas.

There are things that you can do that are natural and easy for you and there are things that are difficult for you and sometimes impossible we all have strengths we all have weaknesses you are going to be successful.

[27:57] When and because you understand yours.

Tell you’re going to address your weaknesses in a couple of different ways when you’re starting out and your business and your company is small you’re going to do your best to improve your areas of weaknesses now look.

[28:16] You’re never going to become great at those things but you can get better

and you have to you owe it to your family to yourself the people that you’re providing if you’re an entrepreneur and want to be in a business situation in your own business you’re going to have to do some things at the beginning that you’re just not that good at

do the best you can

get better at it and hand it off as soon as possible and that’s the second way you address these weaknesses you hand them off either through Staffing or through partners that you

select to be a part of your team now there’s a lot more to think and say about Partners but just know that,

if you bring in a partner or staff they should be complimentary they should not be just like you.

Because if they are just like you then your weaknesses are going to be magnified across the organization

the people that you bring into work with you need to compliment you they need to be strong where you are weak and that means they will probably by definition be weak where you are strong and that’s okay,

as long as both of you are aware that this is the dynamic this is what’s happening we’re not criticizing each other for a weaknesses,

but we are appreciating each other’s strengths number 8 you pay attention to the marketplace.

[29:43] You sell what they want not what you love this seems almost at ecology.

But it is amazing how people will want to get into a business and sell what they love without regard for what people want,

I see it in the real estate business and you could see it in a lot of different businesses that ultimately end up failing.

If you sell what you want.

Then you may find other people who are just like you who will buy what you want.

But as you get a little older and a little out of touch.

And your natural inclination is to do what you’ve always done you may find that the things that you love and things that you want or not two things at the market once I can’t imagine having a turquoise,

orange or bright pink or yellow front door to my house I can’t imagine.

But this is what the market wants and certain areas today so guess what I’ve had at least one door and all those colors except we haven’t done yellow yet I don’t think.

But we will if that’s what we need because I’m selling what the market once.

[31:06] The next thing you will do his craft your message to address perceived need.

[31:13] You’re always paying attention to what’s out there in the market and what people want what they think they want and you’re addressing that in the things the products and services that you provide,

this will be your formula for the success that you want to pay attention to the market.

Now number 9 you pay attention to your customers number 8 was he pay attention to the marketplace number 9 you should pay you attention to your customers you know who they are and in the last session the last show.

I talked about who your customers actually are as a real estate investor and to some extent the people that buy our houses or rent our houses our customers

but in a very real sense our true customers as Real Estate Investors particularly flipping Fix and Flip investors are,

the people who put up the money

and partner with us financially to get the deals done those are the ones that we need to make happy because those are the ones that we want to keep buying in the sense that they buy into us and they provide the money for us to keep going so,

pay attention to these people to pay attention to what’s going on in the market and what selling out there but pay attention to the other people that you rely on

to keep your business going as well.

Number 10 while remaining focused your Spidey senses are tuned to The Winds of Change.

[32:37] Do remain focused.

Do stay in your lane whatever phrase or metaphor you want to use don’t get distracted but always be paying attention to the Winds of Change.

[32:53] Like a lot of other investors I got caught unawares in 2007 and 8 when the market turned and we had the historic rash and it hurt.

[33:04] I’m fortunate that that did not destroy my business and my livelihood and that we not only survived but the in the next several years we actually did really well.

However,

I would have been better off if I had been paying attention to what was going on out there in the marketplace and watching for the danger signs

I had a couple of tough years and seven and eight where income was difficult to come by because it was hard to sell the houses that I bought pre-crash for a profit

post-crash so.

Keep your Spidey senses I would suggest that you listen to the flipping America show all the time because we

I taking the lessons we learn from back then we are paying attention to what’s going on in the marketplace and we’re reporting on it here

but also just listen to what the Realtors are telling you and your Market listen to what’s happening with the sales the days on Market in the price points that you’re working in in the areas where you are.

[34:07] Always be tuned to The Winds of Change fortunately those Winds Don’t Change quickly or that often in real estate but if you’re in some other business

things could turn around really quickly

so be prepared and be listening now I am not saying to go chasing after rafad back in a few minutes I’m going to tell you please don’t do that.

Number 11 you balance Challenge and realism when setting your goals.

[34:37] Okay so let’s say that you can you can now do 50 pushups in 2 minutes.

It is not really going to be much of a goal for you to sit down and say it well by the end of next week I want to be able to do 52 pushups in 2 minutes.

Okay that’s a goal and it’s good to maintain but if you want to grow and improve and I’m not just picking them push-ups but I am using it as an example.

Maybe you need to push yourself a little bit harder maybe go for 60 push-ups in 2 minutes.

It’s up to you to find that balancing point but your goals have to be realistic you know you wouldn’t say if I can do 50 pushups in 2 minutes then 6 weeks from now I want to do a hundred push-ups in 2 minutes that’s probably unrealistic.

[35:32] Unless you’re just not really trying to do your 50 but you know.

What’s realistic and you know what what represents a real challenge.

And I would suggest that once you identify a goal that represents a real challenge then up it just a little bit just to make sure that the challenge is there because in order for you to grow.

And improve upon your current success you have to get better faster mentally stronger.

Maybe not physically stronger if you’re in in business but you have to improve and the only way you really improve is to push yourself beyond what you think you’re capable of

that’s where the challenge comes in so set goals for yourself that are challenging but still within the realm of realism.

[38:38] Music.

[38:56] While remaining current you don’t get wrapped up in business fads.

Most of the business fads and folks have been around and business now for longer than I care to admit but I’ve been watching what’s been happening in the business world for almost 35 years.

[39:17] Okay maybe a little bit longer than that even.

I seen feds come and go I’ve read business books over the years and I have watched as businesses would try to incorporate the latest and greatest thing here’s what I think.

If you really want to know.

Most of these business fads are either some new way to try and motivate unmotivated people.

Or provide an excuse for less than Optimal Performance that’s what it really comes down to.

[39:53] Most of the feds are a new way to try and motivate unmotivated people.

[40:03] Or they become an excuse for less than Optimal Performance it’s heartbreaking to see though some organizations that are functioning okay decide they want to be great.

Excellent and they re-engineer the entire company while the company is operating okay people hate it the employees lose more a lot of people leave the company and they say you know the company that was working okay it’s shutting down

massive layoffs and so forth and so on.

[40:31] Sings like mindfulness boy that’s a big one right now mindfulness we all want to be more mindful don’t we 12

is there actual studies out now that show that the companies that are at promoting mindfulness among their employees are seeing a decrease in actual product productivity people are so busy being mindful.

Not busy doing their job.

Work-life balance that sounds like a good thing but for most people this is never going to be a reality,

for most people work involves a one-hour commute

Route 8 to 10 hours on the job 1 hour back and shimmy you sleep just seven hours a night which is not healthy for most people you have five to seven hours left in your day and if you live a thoughtfully plan like well there goes 30 minutes a day just making plans and you have time for meal prep Home Maintenance relating to the family in a few minutes with the kids

and realistically if you have children you have no time to watch TV or go to the movies or entertain yourself.

[41:36] Anyway balance is really kind of an illusion.

[41:41] You are going to be away from the home more than you are going to be there that’s life deal with it it’s just is.

Sorry Kids daddy can’t play today. He’s got to go do those things that Daddy does to make sure that you wake up not hungry in a bed with a roof over your head.

[42:03] Play with the other kids.

This is one of the things in end this may be a reflection of my age and so I’m just going to vent a little bit but I see these commercials where moms are playing with their daughters and dads are playing with the their boys are the girls or whatever and it’s fine you know

I I played with the kids a little bit too but.

Our kids are they really should be playing with kids they should be developing social skills with other children and.

What do you do if your parents is communicate and spend time that’s all fine but your first and best Playmate should not be your mom or your dad.

[42:41] That’s my opinion I can probably be talked out of it but that’s what I think is Moana,

anyway next phrase fat or business thing that kind of music Maisy idea from working from home you know what most people that have lived and worked in the in the.

Corporate world they just can’t pull this off.

And a lot of the companies that have work from home initiatives are pulling back on that now and getting people back in the office when you’re at home you think you can multitask really you’re just.

Distracted to ask that’s what it is the other thing though is as a entrepreneur and a small business owner working from home may be your only choice.

Then you got to learn how to make it work but that’s not because it’s trendy or fashionable it’s just because of necessity.

That’s different when your life and your livelihood and your food on the table depends on your success and you know.

Real the real estate business is kind of a eat what you kill business right now your salary comes effective when you do so that’s going to cause you to get focused and learn how to get work done from home but a lot of people just simply can’t do it

then there’s a whole buzzwords thing I always get a kick out of this and.

[44:01] Oh that’s all I’m going to say but I don’t want to take too much on today’s young people but whenever I go and spend time with kids that are working in offices and so forth and they are saying things like pivot and lean in

Agile development and it’s a unicorn or we’re going to be disrupting Force the gig economy machine learning Industrial Revolution 4.0 out of automation you know enterpreneur

artificial intelligence corporate storytelling push tolerance discretionary effort business ecosystem you know if I done

a search on the buzz words for that,

I could have had a different set of buzzwords for every year over the past 30 years and all these things are are

attempts for corporations to try to get better and find a way to finally motivated those generally unmotivated people that are out there in the cubicles or

sitting in the open office area which that one is that one really cracks me up every Minds me of a school cafeteria.

[45:08] Everybody sitting at these common tables everybody can talk no one can talk to someone on the phone because you have someone sitting within a foot or two of you also trying to talk on their phone so they have these

elaborate open

things were they save money because you’re not providing officers but then they have to provide phone booths for people to go and sit and have a private conversation but then they have to yank all of the

electrical outlets out of this phone please because.

[45:36] The people will go in there and plug the laptop and work where they can concentrate without people constantly interrupting them and

not just that their actual studies showing that.

[45:48] Employees are passing around you no communicable diseases because they’re sitting right there within proximity of each other and and so you know

a person getting sick creates a lot of people getting sick and just yeah it’s a fan.

So be aware what’s going on but a successful person ignores the fads and keeps on pushing for actual business results.

[46:16] Number 13 in reasons why you are going to be successful you will push yourself.

[46:25] You will go to the edge of your ability and stamina and then push a little bit harder tomorrow or in a few days the edge of your ability and stamina will be a little further out.

You don’t have to do this of course feel free to continue to be mediocre but here is how you grow and I’m going to use an analogy from the gym let’s say,

you go over there and you pick up those 10 lb dumbbells and you’re going to do a set of curls and after you’ve done it six times,

you have to throw your shoulder into it a little bit and we call this a form break and you break your form and that way as soon as your phone breaks and you can’t do it with the right form you’re setting yourself up for injury and you should stop.

Okay so you can do it six times okay after you’ve done it six times and you can’t do it anymore.

Then what you do is you get your other hand in there if you’re doing this with your right arm get your other hand in there keep your form good but let your left hand help just a little bit and push yourself

for two more reps push yourself further than you think you can go and then you do the same with your left arm.

You push yourself as far as you can go and then a little bit more if you do this now give yourself a day to rest and come back and in two days you’re probably not going to notice much of a difference but.

[47:50] It’s going to sneak up on you if you consistently do this in six weeks you’ll be doing 15-pound dumbbells 8 times.

Something that at this moment you can’t imagine that’s how you grow in the weight room that’s also.

Analogy for how you grow in life and business and management and Leadership and all of these skills that were talking about you do everything you can.

To do something well and when you think that you are exhausted and can’t do any more do a little bit more.

And the next time you get to that point you will find that your Baseline is that little bit more.

[48:37] I have been amused over the years watching young people about to have children.

Everybody who out who is listening that has children know exactly what I’m about to say you don’t know what it’s like to be tired until you have a newborn.

And when you’re up all during the night yeah.

Right you find out what your limits truly are and that natural circumstance pushes you beyond what you thought you were capable of doing.

And then you’re capable of doing alright so.

You’re going to be successful because you’re going to push yourself you’re going to go to the edge of your ability and push a little harder and then your Edge is going to be further tomorrow and then little bit further the next time and.

You look you won’t feel the growth in the minut increments but you’ll look back after 6 months or a year and you’ll see why I’ve really started to move the ball here and I’m getting better at this.

[49:48] Number 14 he will never stop learning.

[49:54] To be a success you will never stop learning never turn your brain off find a way to keep stimulating that brain and keep learning more.

Learning learning learning.

[50:10] My son is my youngest child and he is wrapping up his college education.

His two daughters have successfully completed their college education now I want to say some things about college but I gave my son this talk,

and my daughters I gave all of them this talk and I’m going to tell you the true purpose of higher education in many respects college education is overrated

it’s.

Young people who are largely immature and feeling bulletproof learning to socialize with other young people and start to get a little bit more toward the independence of adulthood and

learning two or three things that may help them in their career know that depends on what they major in.

It’s a major in something that is eminently practical such as engineering or something that’s designs.

Entity specific skills that you can only learn it a high-level fine but you know a lot of kids are graduating from college saddled with college,

$100,000 of college debt they go out in the end up taking a job that they didn’t have to have a college degree for.

[51:23] It’s happening in some respects college is overrated it isn’t for everyone,

contrary to the popular wisdom that’s out there but it is for some and now my friends I’m going to share with you what I’ve told my children about the true purpose of higher education.

Here it is.

[51:46] When you are in a good college or university you will learn how to learn.

[51:56] That’s it the best most valuable thing that can happen to you in college is to learn how to learn.

[52:06] You see the way our schools are set up truly unfortunate when you going to Elementary in high school.

Your success in class is determined by how well you can memorize the facts and regurgitate them on the exam

all you’re doing is spitting out stuff that you learned you’re not really learning how to think and you’re not really learning how to learn your learning how to memorize stuff.

[52:34] There’s nothing really wrong with that

because knowing facts actual facts is the basis for thinking at higher levels you can never progressed to True thinking at higher levels if you don’t know the underlying facts so that’s okay.

But in college you moved to the higher order levels of thinking

the application of knowledge the true understanding of it the evaluation of competing sets of data the synthesis of different ideas,

yes that’s what you learn how to do in college you learn how to learn.

You set yourself up for a lifetime of success if you learn how to learn learn how to read a book learn how to evaluate a thought learn how to put,

thoughts from,

different sources together and come up with something that is maybe a novel approach your learning how to learn and when college is over.

[53:38] The sexual development of the world is not.

New things are being discovered and thought of an approach has taken all the time throughout all of your life and.

In order to avoid being stuck in the what becomes a rut.

Of the summation of knowledge when you were in college you must be prepared to continually learn.

Commit now to a lifetime of learning Mark Twain is credited with this.

Probably didn’t really say it but here is a quote it’s one of my favorites the person who does not read has no advantage over the person who cannot read.

[54:31] Think about it you probably heard it before the person who does not read has no advantage over the person who cannot read,

yeah there’s some entertaining stuff on TV and with the today’s streaming services there is a Nino a explosion of.

Options and things that you can spend your evenings watching and I I’ll tell you Diane and that’s been our fair amount of time and binge-watching different things as well you know we’re not immune to this but.

You also miss a universe of wisdom By ignoring what’s been written down.

[55:12] Read learn grow improve add skills evaluate new tools.

[55:24] Put all this together with high-level thinking this is another area where you will push yourself and because of that you will succeed.

The number 15 this is the most important reason you’re going to succeed it’s because you won’t quit.

You just won’t give up.

[55:46] Some days are going to feel like you are neck deep in mud but you’re being asked to Sprint through it.

You don’t believe you can you get tired thinking about it he don’t even want to try you’re going to have days like this.

For some of you you might even have a week’s like this every step every phone call every email takes effort that feels superhuman to you but you carry on.

When you don’t feel like getting up get up earlier when you don’t feel like pushing on push harder when you think you’ve reached the end of your rope tie a knot and hang on,

when you feel like a solitary soldier on the battle line being rushed by 500 warriors on horses pull your sword and prepare to fight to the last.

It will not always feel like a fight but some days it will those are the days to not.

[56:40] It’s easy to not quit when things are going well the time to not quit is the time when things look bleak,

when the outcome is uncertain the time for courage is when you have fear the time for resolute determination is when it seems that Superior forces are arrayed against you you will succeed,

because you will not quit.

You will stand your ground you will work the work you will trust the process you will do the thing you will not give up you’re going to learn you’re going to improve your going to get better and you will

succeed.

[57:22] One of the great privileges of my life was to speak at the corporate Chapel of Chick-fil-A.

[57:30] This is many years ago and after it was over I had the privilege of walking into Truett Cathy’s office and sitting down with him for a few minutes.

A few years later we shared the stage together and I’ve told this story before but I want you to hear it again and he gave me his book.

[57:50] It’s easier to succeed than to fail and most people fail because they quit right before they succeed.

[58:02] Don’t quit.

[58:03] Music.
