Flipping America 177, Your Super Power, Create Meaning

podcast 177 meaning

Expected Air Date: 8/13/18

Opening

You can create meaning. That’s powerful.

I have a great photo in my humor collection of a pig who looks like he’s smiling at the camera. The caption says, “I turn vegetables into bacon. What’s your super power?” I have an unsurprisingly large number of bacon jokes in this collection but this is one of my favorites.

Humor aside, I want to ask you this question today. If you could have any super power, what would it be? What if I told you that you already have a power inside of you that is remarkable, perhaps even super?

You have a few actually, but today I want to zero in on the power that is already inside of you to make your life count — to live a life that has depth and meaning is within your grasp. You have the power! And in a few minutes I’m going to tell you how to unleash that power.

Topic: The Power of Meaning

You have the power to attach meaning to your life. From the grandest plans, the wildest unexpected experiences, the unpredictable and often hurtful behavior of others, right down to the smallest details of your everyday existence, you decide not only how meaningful these are to you, but what that meaning is. This is an awesome power which can be both tremendously positive and dangerous at the same time.

Dangers

Giving too much importance to the unimportant.

Making everything important.

Making nothing important.

Focusing on the wrong problems.

Attaching disconnected “meaning” to life events.

Positives

Ability to sort out and prioritize.

Think carefully about the “presenting issue” and look for the real problem.

Attach meaning that flows from your sense of purpose and larger belief system.

Realize that impulse reactions may be “normal” in a sense, but not usually the most helpful responses.

So what are the steps to living a meaningful life?

First, think long and hard about what “meaningful” means? Ask yourself a lot of questions. What is important to you? Why? And why is that your answer?

For example, Meaningful are those things that are

Lasting

Personal

Sources of joy, peace, contentment, entertainment, humor, fulfillment

It seems that the longer something lasts, the more intrinsic meaning it has. The human soul — Your house — Your car — Your toothbrush.

While we want to believe that every life has value, we obviously attach more value to those around us. The closer a person is, the more meaningful that relationship is. A distant person we’ve never met or heard of is brutally murdered in another city. While we may feel a moment of sadness or compassion for that person and his/her family, we are not as impacted as we are when a close friend is robbed at gunpoint. And THAT doesn’t shake us as much as hearing a doctor say we have a terminal illness. The point is, the more personal something is, the more meaning we naturally attach to it.

We all carry excess baggage around in the form of attaching meaning to people or life events that we could probably let go and just be better off. Is it really that easy to just drop it? No, but that’s not what I’m suggesting either. I’m suggesting that instead of holding on to the bag of “stuff”, open it up, sort through it, think the thoughts that need to be thought, feel the feelings that need to be felt, decide what needs to be decided, take responsibility for whatever you can actually do now about the situation, ask yourself what is to be learned here, how did this event or person prepare you, enrich you, inform you. I encourage you to unpack that bag carefully, thoughtfully and purposefully. And once you have done that, pack it back up and put it into long term storage, saving out only those things that you intentionally choose.

Now that’s for the things and people that have already happened. Today is a new day. How will we approach this with meaning and purpose? I want you to have a good day. And a truly good day is one that begins well. For most of us, what happens in the first couple of hours of our day tends to set the tone for how that day is going to go. Now if you listened to what I’ve just said, this doesn’t HAVE to be the case, but it usually is. So as much as possible, let’s start each day off well.

Notice I’m avoiding saying “great”. Every day can’t be great. Because if they were, none of them would be truly great, since great is comparison word and in order to be great, something else has to be less than. So your goal is to have a GOOD day. And some of them will turn out to be great!

You’ll have no trouble finding 1000 books and articles telling you to start out your day with exercise, a healthy breakfast, quiet time, journaling, and so on. Nothing wrong with any of those, but some of us have a schedule that defies regularity and many more of us just don’t really keep up with those things consistently. And by defining a good day as starting off with those habits, when we miss, our day can be ruined by self-inflicted guilt.

Here’s a different idea:

Start your day with thinking. No matter what your routine is, or how it is interrupted, you can do some thinking, right? While in the shower, during that commute, even while getting dressed, there are things we HAVE to do in order to start our day that do not require our complete attention, so have some thinking time at the beginning of each day. And what should you think about?

Here are some suggestions:

  • The Thankful list.
  • My Purpose – This is a different show, but review your “why am I here” statements.
  • The things that give my life meaning. How will I have a chance to accomplish these today?
    • Honoring God
    • Helping others
    • Providing for my family
  • Get 5 things done today. What are they?
  • Anticipate Interruptions. See any possibilities?
  • Small Reward for a Good Day.
    • Favorite TV show
    • Patio Time
    • A favorite beverage

Then try to do something physical each day, even if it’s just going for a walk. Physical activity does more than benefit your body – it also frees your brain. Exercise can be a potent treatment for depression and anxiety. You don’t have to be a gym rat — but you can probably walk a mile in 20 minutes, so walk somewhere for 10 minutes and then turn around and walk home.  That’s much better than doing nothing.

You have the Power of Meaning. You are already using this power, but if you realize just how powerful you are, you can start now to shape the life you want.

[2:12] As I move on through life I realize I have realized.

We have something up our inside of us all of us too and you have a 2,

[11:13] Just let me say that we have another app in the app store to haven’t mentioned it in a while but we have an app called the property grade app

you answer 10 simple questions about the property that you were thinking about this is for Fix and Flip

and the app instantly tells you what you can expect to make your return on investment you return on cash and the program gives the project a letter grade using the proprietary flipping America investment property grade algorithm that’s right

you can get a letter grade on your property and this is particularly helpful when you’re comparing one with another and maybe you have to choose between one of the other and you wanted me to move for the best deal.

Okay lets you know I mentioned the other day we have a lot of questions piling up and let’s

let’s see if we can do a few of those questions right now Sherry from Colorado Springs says

do you by burnouts what do you think about this I’m looking at a house that had a kitchen fire most of the house is fine but the kitchen is destroyed.

Well that’s the gist in question of course the answer is if the price is right we’ll buy anyting and

know though you’ve if you listen to the show all the time you’ve heard me moderate that statement just a little bit there are some things I won’t buy no matter what the price is and there are some things you have to pay me to take them off your hands but.

[12:33] Generally if we can get the price where we need to then we’ll buy it but in order to get the price where we need to I want to understand what we’re going to need to do.

Because fire,

is indiscriminate you know if it’s wood it’s going to burn and it burned it may have burned and you know some of the important structural pieces of the house so what my thought is on the Sherry is I like to.

Buy a burn out if I have a due diligence. Where I can get

an engineer in their structural engineer to take a look at the structure itself and tell me exactly what I have to put back and that way I can cost it out and know that I’m buying it at the right price know I have you know.

Most of you know that I bought hundreds of houses at the Foreclosure auction and you do not get the privilege or opportunity to go inside most of these and I bought a couple that long to hold weed

came inside and discovered that there was a fire and.

You know half of the fires and homes start in the kitchen I don’t know if you were aware of that but the kitchen is the source of most fires and.

[13:44] In the house that I bought.

Every single one of them had a fire in the kitchen and there was enough damage there that the people just took the insurance money and took off and let it go into foreclosure I don’t know that that’s really and on her way to handle it.

They then I wasn’t there in the middle of their situation and Circumstance but so who am I to judge,

we ended up with the house and so we had some situations that we had to deal with that we hadn’t anticipated and we learned firsthand some of the things that have to be done,

a fire repair can be fairly basic and it can be extensive.

And expensive this is why I would very much prefer to get an engineer in there and tell me exactly what needs to be done just because.

We learn this just because a board has some smoke damage or even a little bit of char doesn’t mean it’s lost its structural integrity and doesn’t necessarily mean that it has to be replaced there other things that you can do

to ameliorate the damage there in and work with what’s there and what’s left but.

In out Sherry you always want to make sure that you do a good repair good quality repair and something that you’re not only proud of but can stand behind.

[15:06] Sean from Long Beach California says I bought a house using information from an online deal analyzer but now I can’t find anyone who will do the work for what the analyzer said it should cost.

The repairs are going to take take out all or most of the profit what would you do.

Sean I would make sure I got another bid first of all to see how it came out because not all contractors are going to bid the same but if you if you get a couple or three bids and they’re all high

it is apparently you’re not going to get this work done for what the deal analyzer said and you know I.

I don’t really want to pick on the deal analyzer because cost have gone up dramatically

in the last few months and are continuing to rise right now this is due to the rising cost of lumber out of Canada but.

The deal analyzer that you using maybe just a little bit out of date but in at this time in this particular moment a deal analyzer that’s to 3 months out of date could give you a wrong answer and even for.

People who are experienced and don’t even use deal analyzers I’ve seen this in my own business and with other friends of mine.

[16:22] All of us will end up buying a property that’s going to cost more to fix than we thought it was when we bought it

it just happens we do the best we can to avoid this but one of the reasons I wanted to answer your question on the show was this happens to everyone at some point or another it’s not always a deal analyzer sometimes it’s just our fault but

what do we do 12 the first thing that we do is look at unloading the property can we get out of it what we’ve got in it.

If that’s possible unload it and if that’s not possible,

can we unload it at a small loss because I would rather take a small loss now then keep my Capital tied up for 6 months to break even.

[17:06] It’s just a time value of money thing so think about that and then also think about opportunity cost but at the very end.

If we’re not able to unload it then we just finished the property out and we and we do the right thing

even though we know it’s costing us we do the right thing we fix the property and we put it out there and we move it on now

one of the great things about this Market in specially if this property is in your area there in Long Beach prices are going up so fast that maybe you’ll be able to sell it for more than you thought.

[17:39] Music.

[17:53] So you want to learn how to flip houses I want to show you how to flip houses and there’s probably no one in the country better qualified than me to show you I flipped hundreds and hundreds of them,

and I also have some training and degree and experience and education so I could show you how to do exactly what I’ve done hundreds of times don’t believe me.

Head on over to flip starter event.com but in the meantime Give a listen to Pat caywood.

[18:19] Cleveland Tennessee and I’ve been.

Doing some flipping since about March of this year and had started with a Nationals program that was very expensive I spent today with Roger Blankenship.

Learning about his program and boy do I wish I’d met Rodger.

[18:41] He has a clear concise program and many tools that are going to be very hot.

[18:47] And starting and managing the program and the mentorship and Leadership and coaching that he saw frame are in value.

Thank you so much.

[18:59] Music.

[19:51] I got an email from Carrie and Brittany out of Jacksonville Florida weird we are first time home buyers and have a house under contract

home inspector has listed several items that need to be addressed and it has us Running Scared but it was so difficult to find a house and win a bid we hate to give it up.

Please advise us here’s the list and they sent us a list and it’s a typical list of a lot of different things that you would see on a home inspection report and home inspectors,

you know we’ve got some running gags about home inspectors and

and I don’t want to pick out all of them because some of them conduct themselves in a professional way but here in the state of Georgia home inspectors don’t have to be licensed and so I seen all kinds of idiocy with home inspectors here in Georgia.

In Florida I think it’s different case but home inspectors are by Design they’re there to try to find defects with

the property that’s what you higher than 4 and they kind of think that they have an earn their money if they don’t find something and so they will go looking for things and sometimes home inspectors will point out things that don’t meet current code.

The house met code when it was built because codes change all the time and.

[21:09] To some extent the codes represent an improvement in safety gear construction values not that’s not always the case but most of the time and so

those upgrades would be considered something that would be needed for example,

the code was changed maybe 10 years ago I don’t know don’t quote me on that

an expansion tank was added to water heaters at that time and we had bought.

For years we bought a older houses they didn’t have that expansion tank and almost every time we did the home inspector with Dingus and say you know there’s no expansion tank well you know there wasn’t one required when this house was built

and so we can’t be required,

to go in and change it just because the code is changed because the house grandfathered-in however if you get nervous home buyers.

Who are going to run away then you have to make a decision whether you’re going to spend a couple hundred dollars to put an expansion tank that will probably never be used or needed but is there as an extra measure of safety those are.

The kinds of things that home inspectors will do now I want to address just three things from your list and then give you a strategy okay.

You said on the list it says the HP AC is 10 years old recommend replacing well.

[22:29] He AC units basically.

If they give you anything past 10 years then count your blessings they real question is not.

In this case the age but what’s the condition of it

and then I would ask how you know what kind of deal are you getting on this house and of course I would like to know the size of the unit 2 because that affects the price you know if it’s a 2-ton you’re going to be looking at a couple thousand dollars to replace and

basically think about $1,000 a ton, so if it’s a 4-ton $4,000 maybe a little bit more for that but.

It probably won’t be before it’ll be something between the two in a Ford pending on the size of the house but if this is your first house that you’re buying I’m just going to go out on a limb and guess it’s not.

I know a large house so in your case.

[23:22] It probably is going to need to be replaced sooner or later

but my attitude about this tends to be I replace things when they break and you know I try to make them last as long as they can and take care of them in the meantime this is the way I’ve always approached my life,

maybe it’s just the way I was brought up but I take care of what I have and make it last as long as I can I do this with cars you know I drive a pretty nice car now but it has 120,000 miles on it and not plan on driving it for a while longer.

And the you know I do this with air conditioners at at at my house I have air conditioners that are 15 years old.

And they’re doing okay but I get them serviced all the time so if they’re in pretty good shape and they’re working I wouldn’t worry too much about this but know that in the next five years you’re probably going to have a significant expense okay.

Town of I’ll come back to what to do about this,

in the large picture and then I just want to talk about a couple of other things the 80s says the roof was improperly flashed at Dormers recommend removing current roofing material in affected area

properly flashing and ceiling in replacing roofing material and because you knew I would ask you let me know that the roof is asphalt shingle alright this happens a lot.

[24:44] But just because the inspector can’t see the flashing doesn’t mean it’s there and I know you had a question about even what flashing is that’s the small pieces of.

Galvanized metal that are placed up against.

The vertical structure in this case the side of a dormer and then they’re supposed to be under what’s.

The final surface for the vertical structure and under the shingles as well

they’re not always under the vertical structure and sometimes they’re attached on top of the brick and caulked and not very attractive so if it’s if the house is a siding they will be under their end.

If they do a good job with the siding in the roofing.

The inspector may not be able to see the flashing that actually is there but in any case.

If that house was built by a reputable contractor and they were getting inspections all along the way then that’s flashing is almost certainly there

just because inspector doesn’t see it doesn’t mean that it’s it’s not there I had an inspector one time that told me that the.

The ground the grounding plug in my entire house was not working that.

[26:06] After the first Outlet he plugged into every Outlet in the house in the ground in the east of the circus just weren’t grounded at all and he said we had to rewire the house my contractor went over there and the first Outlet inside the door.

Was the ground broken off in the outlet and so his tester was broken and any place he plugged into for the rest of the house it was going to say there was an open ground and you know.

[26:36] We can spend time laughing about that or calling him an idiot but you know things things happen and home inspectors are not infallible.

[26:45] Even if the house wasn’t flashed in a way that he likes if it’s not leaking and the house is 10 years old I’d say you know you’re going to be all right now.

The next thing is GFI outlets GFCI Outlets not present in bathroom or above countertop and kitchen recommend replacing Outlets with properly install GFCI Outlets this is something that you probably going to want to do.

It’s not that expensive.

And so either you can do it or this is the part you ask me how do you handle all of this well you can go back to the seller.

And in most standard real estate contract you can go back to the seller and ask them to make some repairs now the seller can say no but you do have a negotiation at,

point in the contract probably state,

that there is a right to do this negotiation you need to work with your agent and you need to make sure that you negotiate soundly and don’t lose the property but you can ask for some of these things to be fixed.

[30:02] This is the show flipping America on Roger Blankenship your host Tonight teach people how to make money in real estate now we don’t encourage everyone to go quit your job and drop everything and start

flipping houses like you see him on TV that’s not for everyone and that’s not all there is to real estate investing.

But we do encourage everyone to have real estate is a part of a balanced Investment Portfolio and to that end we try to bring you the best information

Trends demographics methods strategies asset classes and ways of investing that we can that’s what we talked about on the show and of course

we talked a lot about individuals doing the thing that I just said you don’t need to drop your.

[30:44] Drop everything and go do that because that’s really we know a very popular topic right now and that’s where most of the questions that come into the show come from

and as I said before we answer every question that comes in you can send your question two questions at flipping America network.com and when you do please be sure to tell us where you’re from we love to know that and if you don’t say it we’re just going to ask you that first before we deal with the question on the show

shalissa let’s see if we can do a couple more questions in this segment.

Let’s see here Sammy from Tampa says how does anyone have more than 9 rental properties my bank just told me I can’t get any more loans.

Okay fair enough

send me your bank is responding to the normal Bank guidelines for conforming loans I guess you have a mortgage on your own house because we are limited to 10

but the answer is well this to fold first of all pay cash

that’s a great thing to do if you can pay cash for the houses but the next thing is you can go to non-bank lenders to get money for rental properties.

One of the non Bank lenders is Braswell Capital Solutions one of the sponsors of this show so I just want to throw a shout out to my good friend Michael Braswell,

and let you know that he will take care of you just go to Braswell Capital solutions.com and you can call the number there and tell him I sent you.

[32:06] And Michael will be glad to work with you and there is no limit to the number of loans that you can get for rental properties and the great thing is.

The companies that Mike deals with are going to count the income from your rental properties.

As part of the factor in getting approved for the loan great There’s No Limit you can you can have as many as you want.

[32:31] Are the interest rates the same as Banks now they’re little bit higher so for your first nine rental properties you should go to your bank but after that.

Then come see Michael Craig from Harrisburg Pennsylvania.

I need advice for someone who is Young very motivated and willing to work but has no experience no money

and no credit I don’t have bad credit I just don’t have any credit I just turned 20 and really want to get into real estate I’m in Community College part-time but don’t have enough money to pay for full-time college at the University and I don’t want to do student loans.

Well Craig my hat’s off to you.

You sound like a young man who’s already on got some things together because you have enough sense not to do the student loan thing I believe it’s better to.

Take longer to get through college

then to get through college on some sort of schedule and have $150,000 worth of student loans that you have to try to pay off with your $50,000 your job,

and your $49,000 a year lifestyle that comes as a result of that

that’s what happens a lot folks people complain and whine about student loans but it’s because they want to live their lives based on a budget built around their salary without taking into consideration

repayment of student loans in the student loans and becomes a burden and the payment for the student loans isn’t that high but.

[33:59] You know it takes you as long as I pay them off as it does to buy a house so.

Kudos to you for not wanting the student loans I think student loans

I have are a terrible thing because they help universities disguise the incredibly High.

Greats that they charge an unreasonably High did it they don’t have to be that high

their cost haven’t gone up as high as the tuition rate as far as quickly as the tuition rates have gone up over the past 10-15 years but they do it because you know their Student Loan program for everyone and

anyway I don’t get off on a rant about student loans that don’t want to answer your question need advice for someone who is Young motivated and willing to work alright you’re in Harrisburg Pennsylvania.

[34:45] I’m going to venture a guess that there are some investors in Harrisburg Pennsylvania and Craig you need to find them get to a local Real Estate Investors association meeting

look on meetup.com search the internet just search Harrisburg Real Estate Investors see what you see now I didn’t take the time to do that search myself but you can

you can find a meeting that is happening in your area and I promise you,

promise you Craig if you go to that meeting and you say what you just said to me someone there

is going to volunteer to take you under their wing someone there is looking for someone that they can men talk now don’t sign up to pay somebody $50,000 teach you how to flip houses that’s not what you need,

someone there is going to be willing to trade your effort and your work in exchange for

kind of helping them with some of their stuff like if you were in Atlanta I would say come on over and stealing me in my office and let’s see if we can work something out,

we have a program here called them internship where yeah you do pay for your training but you

we also give you an opportunity to work we generate a thousand or two thousand leads every month into this office and will give you an opportunity to.

[36:01] Run with 25 50 or 500 however many you can handle

and try to buy houses on our behalf and when you get one that we’re going to buy we pay you and that day also covers the cost of your training

so we have that going on and there’s probably someone in Harrisburg that’s doing that for you as well I tell you what Craig.

You give it a couple of weeks to find someone in Harrisburg in if you can’t find someone in Harrisburg

reach back out to us and we’ll talk to you about doing it long distance now I had a strategy call a week ago with the lady who lives part-time in Atlanta and part-time in Los Angeles and she wanted to know if she could join them internship

while she was living and working in LA and the answer is yes we can do them internship remotely but them internship does

involve a financial commitment and so I’m trying to help you Craig where you are there’s a very good chance you’re going to find somebody there who would love to be your mentor and work with a motivated young man such as yourself.

[37:08] We’re going to slide out to this next break a little bit early because I am when we come back from this break I’m going to talk to you about your super power the power to give your life meaning be right back.

[37:21] Music.

[37:26] Not too long ago we did a one-day flip starter in Chattanooga Tennessee and low and behold one of my old College friends came out to the event his name is Peter Faulkner and here’s what he had to say about the event.

[37:40] Peter Faulkner here I tended a one-day flip starter training session led by Roger Blankenship and I was amazed to see what has happened in Rogers life in the last 15 years plus years.

Flipping over 800 houses and then this one day training he told how he did it and what.

Falls the blessings the benefits and how to do it and I was so impressed with how well organized and how smooth the training went today.

You’re tempted are encouraged to go so it was not a bad price and if you get a chance to do it even just to consider in Basque.

But I just want to thank Rodger for a great day today and appreciate what he’s doing.

[38:40] You have the power to attach meaning to your life.

From the grandest plans the wildest unexpected experiences the unpredictable and often hurtful behavior of others right down to the smallest details of your everyday existence you decide.

Not only how meaningful these things are to you but what that meaning is this is an awesome power.

Which can be both tremendously positive and dangerous at the same time what do I mean well here’s how it can be dangerous.

You could be giving too much importance to things that are.

Not important you could be making everything important equally or you could be making nothing important.

Either one of those extremes is dangerous it’s entirely possible that you are focusing on the wrong problems.

[39:34] Perhaps giving too much meaning to the things that are not really going to solve what you actually want to see happen.

[39:41] I’ve seen in some of our discussion forums endless conversations about the design of a business card.

[39:49] Somebody that’s just starting a real estate business and they they want to get the logo in the design just right and so they put it out there they work on it to come up with four or five possibilities they put it into a group and people come in on it and I just.

I I kind of laughed but also I kind of.

[40:11] Rebuke is too strong of a word but I do want to say this is an example of focusing on the wrong problem.

[40:19] It it really doesn’t matter especially when you’re beginning it doesn’t matter what your business card looks like in fact I think that you can get this business started without,

having a business card or a logo or a website you don’t need those things what you need is a deal,

and you need to decide to focus on the right problem and that is finding that opportunity finding that property.

And I just had dinner the other day with the,

young man Connor Brooklyn that was an intern in our office over the summer in we sort of had a farewell dinner and he has already found a property back in Alabama that he is planning to buy and,

at dinner we were talking about.

Is entity structure in that sort of thing and how to set up and he doesn’t have an entity doesn’t have a company name he doesn’t know website he doesn’t have business card but he already has a property that he’s probably going to have under contract by the end of the week.

[41:18] And so what does he do I told him to go ahead and.

And put the property in his own name for now and work on getting once against the contract and work on getting that entity put together and then he can quit claim it to the entity later on see that’s taking the problems in the right order

get the deal first just make things happen.

Another example of a danger when comes to the power of meaning is attaching disconnected meaning to life events.

You don’t really control too much about what you dream but if you wake up thinking about what you dreamt and you start attaching meaning to it may or may not have any actual connection to reality.

I also.

Hear people talk about well when I thought that particular thought there was a lightning bolt off in the distance and that just confirm for me that that was the exact I thought really.

[42:10] That didn’t confirm for you that there was a thunderstorm Brewing off in the distance it’s it’s very possible that you can make a dumb decision if you look for external things like that too,

give meaning to your life events all right there are some positives of course to your ability to.

Derive meaning and attach it yourself,

one of the positives is you have the ability to think this over short out and prioritize your life you can think carefully about the presenting issue.

And look for the real problem you say you don’t get to control everything that happens to you throughout each day and that you don’t get to control the behavior of other people oh how we would like to especially driving into work right.

You can control your response back that’s really all you can control is you so you have the power to think about whatever this thing is that just happened.

And look for the real problem you know sometimes it’s very easy to say.

Eat to another person you are acting like a jerk or what we tend to say is you are a jerk.

[43:26] But we don’t tend to say is, we don’t tend to think about.

What did someone do to you to make you want to behave in this way right now or something it’s something like that but we do have the power to look Beyond what’s happening at the moment and look for the real problem

we can attach meaning that flows from our sense of purpose and a larger belief system you know I’ve been working on a project for a few years and don’t want to talk about it too much right here right now but it’s been more difficult to get this project

launch then I ever dreamed possible in fact if I’d known how difficult it was going to be a probably would have done it and that’s I guess a good thing but I also

think that.

[44:09] There is a larger a purpose and system in place here I happen to be a believer I believe in the existence of God and I believe that

that God has a sense of timing about these things and that belief actually allows me to relax a little bit knowing I’m doing the best I can I’m giving it my best effort.

And I think I’m moving an inconsistency with the,

my larger sense of purpose and my reason for being here on this Earth and if it takes a little bit

longer to accomplish well I realize that the accomplishment is not as much of the.

The goal as the process of getting there takes me through and if it’s harder then all that difficulty is meant

for my good and once I choose to believe that it relieve some of the tension and actually kind of makes for a better day.

[45:06] We have the power to realize that impulse reactions may be normal in a sense but not usually the most help.

Responses somebody says something that’s insulting to you or about your mama and your impulses to turn around and slap this ass right out of their mouth

now not anymore course because it’s a different culture and Society than the one in which I grew up but.

That may be a normal reaction but that’s not going to be the most helpful reaction and just if you can get that thought in your brain right there,

you’re going to walk around in a lot more control of your life okay so let me say it again impulse reactions may be normal but not usually the most helpful.

[45:52] Okay so what does this have to do with meaning you see.

We can look for the meaning in the life in life around us and we can attach meaning to the things that happened and in fact.

A lot of the things that happened in most of the ordinary things of our day really don’t have that much meaning.

[46:14] But we can choose to live a meaningful life.

By simply focusing on the things that do gives me now we have to do some things that are ultimately meaningless.

Everyday all day you know the routine that we go about each morning where we me know groom ourselves and dress ourselves and prepare for the day those.

Actions and themselves don’t have a whole lot of lifelong significance or meaning and whether I have on a red shirt or blue shirt today

really doesn’t matter all that much I’m not going to go so far as to say just you know get a couple of black shirts and wear them everyday so you don’t have to think about what you going to wear.

But we are correct if we realize that the things that we wear and in a lot of the things that we put a lot of thought into,

really don’t matter that much in the largest go with things when we get back from this break I’m going to talk to you about the steps to take to live a meaningful life.

[49:02] Now I know what you’re saying what’s the what’s the real estate Thai in here I’m going to tell you this real estate is great but it’s a means to an end.

And the end is a meaningful life and if you want to have a meaningful life while doing real estate you can and.

In the end real estate is about as meaningful as anything else related to your career if real estate is indeed your career.

By which I mean real estate in and of itself isn’t that meaningful I want to encourage you to find something beyond that.

That allows you to give the focus that you need to real estate and then go on and live a rich full meaningful life.

[49:50] In addition to what you doing with it okay.

[49:56] Are step number one I think long and hard about what meaningful means ask yourself a lot of questions.

What is important to you only you can answer this and this is where you have the power only you can decide what is important to you why is that important.

[50:14] And why is that your answer now.

I’m not saying that you need to come to the same conclusion as I have cuz I’ve given this some thought and I’m going to throw a couple things out as a suggestion however I don’t I don’t want you to short-circuit to your thinking process for yourself

in my case I decided some time ago that the things that I would attach the most meaning to are the things that are first of all lasting.

[50:43] Secondly personal and thirdly sources and by that I mean sources of joy peace contentment and.

I bet it entertainment humor and fulfillment.

And I discovered that acts of kindness bring a sense of fulfillment so therefore acts of kindness have meaning to me this honestly folks I know it sounds kind of crazy.

But this is why there’s a blue button on our website where you can press to get a free strategy call.

The purpose of that call is not really to sell you anything if our mentoring program is a good fit fine but for most people it’s not when everyone comes up in the conversation it’s an act of kindness.

And I say this at our Wednesday lunches all the time to one of my goals every year is to help people and if I can help people then I’m meeting my goals,

has nothing to do with money or Finance or selling or anything and sent in the business sense just a desire to help people.

And this flows out of my larger purpose and what I’ve decided to attach meaning to.

And it seems to me that the longer something lasts the more intrinsic meaning it has for example the human soul compared to your house compared to your car compared to your toothbrush.

[52:06] The soul has much more meaning than your toothbrush and your house is going to last longer than your car.

[52:14] So why would give it a greater sense of importance while we want to believe that every

life every human life has value we obviously attach more value to those around us the closer a person is the more meaningful that relationship is a distant person we’ve never met or heard of is brutally murdered in another city

well we may feel the moment of sadness or compassion for that person and his or her family we’re not as impacted as we

are when a close friend is robbed at gunpoint and that doesn’t shake us up as much as hearing a doctor tell us that we have a terminal illness.

Damn not saying that I have terminal illness and just making a point the point is the more personal something is the more meaning we naturally attached to it.

So meaning is personal we all carry excess baggage around in the form of attaching meaning to people or life events that we probably should just let go and we’d be better off.

But is it really that easy just to drop it no.

But it’s not but that’s not what I’m suggesting either I’m suggested that instead of holding onto the bag of stuff and you know it just kind of doubt they’re Weighing on her mind and our brain.

[53:30] Take a minute and open up the bag will take an hour if you need to open up that bag short through it.

And think the thoughts that need to be thought about whatever that thing is I feel the feelings that need to be filled

this was kind of a breakthrough for me few years back when I actually I was going through a difficult. And went to see a counselor for a while and he said hey,

don’t be afraid to feel your feelings so I go out of my back porch and I would feel my feelings and at first it wasn’t pleasant but then I.

Got to the point where okay I can feel the feelings now that’s over with then I can decide what needs to be decided

take responsibility for whatever I can do whatever I can actually do now about the situation and sometimes that’s nothing but sometimes there is something then.

Ask yourself what can be learned here how did this event or person prepare you and Rich you inform you.

And then after you’ve asked these questions and you thought what needs to be thought you felt what needs to be felt you decided what needs to be decided and you taking responsibility.

I encourage you to pack the bag back up.

Thoughts of thoughtfully and purposely and put it into long-term storage.

[54:51] Maybe say about those things that you intentionally choose maybe little nuggets of wisdom that you have cleaned her are items on her to-do list because there is something that you can do about this down other than that bag up and put it away and.

Decide that it no longer holds a place of significant burden in your brain.

Yes you can decide this now that’s for things and people that have already happened today’s a new day.

[55:23] How are you going to approach this day with meaning and purpose I want you to have a good day

and a truly good day is one that begins well for most of us what happens in the first couple of hours of our day tends to set the tone for how the day is going to go,

this is due to something known as confirmation bias but I don’t want to go into that right now if you listen to what I just said this doesn’t have to be the case but it usually is so as much as possible

I want you to start off each day

well now noticed I’m avoiding saying great everyday can’t be great because if everyday was great none of them would be great since great is comparison word and then in order to be great something else has to be

less than great so your goal is to have a good day okay and some of them will turn out to be great but you’re you’re trying to just have a good day

you’re not going to have any trouble finding a thousand books and articles telling you to start your day with exercise and healthy breakfast quiet time journaling so on so forth and have all these disciplines and habits and so far nothing is wrong with any of those things,

but some of us have a schedule that defies regularity and many more of us just

don’t really keep up with those things consistently now I live a fairly this in life but I have to admit that I’m not.

[56:36] Extremely religious when it comes to any of these morning habits I don’t journal every day I don’t start everyday the same cuz some days just start off needing me to jump into

the day a little bit sooner and defining a day a good day starting off of those habits when we missed we set ourselves up.

[56:57] Because of that confirmation by sent our whole day can be ruined by in a self-inflicted guilt so here’s a different idea.

Whatever you’re doing start your day with thinking no matter what your routine is just think if your routine is interrupted you can still think.

While you’re in the shower during the commute while you’re getting dressed there are some things we have to do in order to start our day that don’t require a complete attention Okay some of you should pay more attention to what you’re wearing but after you done that.

[57:29] Do some thinking you have something time at the at the beginning of each day right and what should you think about,

I’m just going to run to a list your real quick as we’re running out of time here are my suggestions what’s think about number one on my list is my thankful list the things in my life and I’m thankful for then I review my,

purpose. I’ve got a whole show on this but why am I here review the why am I here statements then I think about the things that give my life meaning.

Persons in the lasting things a personal things in the lasting things that give meaning to my life then I think about you know what am I going to get done today and I’ll try to,

on the long list of stuff five things that I’m going to accomplish today what are they then I’ll anticipate interruptions.

And think about the things that can possibly jump in there because they do then I set myself a reward for the end of the day.

Download addition to thinking I try to do something physical at least

every day even if it’s just going for a walk because physical activity can do you a world of good but we’re running out of time.

You have the power of meaning you’re already using this power but if you realize just how powerful you are you can start now to shape the life you want.
